I read a blog talking about living off the land, of living by the fruit of your own labor. http://eternallyhopefulheart.wordpress.com/2011/07/12/simplicity/
It got me to thinking. I’m a city girl, born and raised. I like garden vegetables, but hate tomato worms and squash bugs. I like my meat to come cleaned and cut up and in cellophane packages from the supermarket. I have no wish to shoot Bambi and then have to skin him. I once saw someone kill a chicken by twisting their neck. I really don’t think I could do that. I’d have to be starving first. I’ve been fishing, but only once. When I was a child, someone gave Daddy some fish for us to eat. Mom came home to find them swimming in the kitchen sink. She was expected to kill and clean and cook them. I remember how upset she was and I’m on her side. Fish is deep-fat fried and comes from Long John Silvers or Red Lobster. I have a fair complexion, so being in the sun is not something I enjoy. I really like my air conditioning in the summer. ,I’ve been camping and it was okay, but I hate bugs and prefer mattresses. I may be a baby boomer, but I enjoy my computer and my television and especially my indoor plumbing. I don’t think I would do well ‘roughing’ it. I’m not sure I could cook without my microwave. I’ll just have to be the city girl I am.
I was born on an island, Maui, so I think that makes me a country girl by birth. But since then I’ve been a city girl. When my inlaws visited hubby and me in NYC some 30 years ago, they told me I acted as though I had been born there. They were right…the stork dropped me in the wrong place. Although I must admit to still having old-fashioned, down home values. So we seem very much alike, except I must confess to being a liberal Catholic.
2 peas in a pod?…hugmamma. 😉
