It seems that Obama, while traveling in Europe, directed his staff to use the autopen to sign into law an extension to the Patriot Act! It had been approved at the last moment by Congress and there wasn’t time for Obama to sign it in person before it expired. So…does that make this a legal document? The autopen has never been used to sign legislation before. The use of the autopen has been used since Dwight Eisenhower but not for anything but casual correspondence. So…is it real? is it constitutional? Time will tell.
