If you are like me, you look forward to the Fair each fall! I like going just to eat corn dogs, roasted corn, and fried pickles! The family of a young woman I work with has run a food concession stand since she was a child. Thinking of all the fair goers walking around munching, I was envisioning dollar signs and profits. In talking to her, I discovered their stand, named The Shanty, donates all of their profits to a family foster child placement service. it is a smaller placement service without access to some of the funding given to larger, more well-known organizations. I was impressed with their dedication and commitment. It made me remember other food courts run by organizations such as Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Lions club. As you enjoy the fair and all the good food, consider buying from one of the booths run by a charity. That way you can feel altruistic while munching down all of those calories! I you do go into The Shanty to sit while you eat, be sure to check out the US flag on the wall and say hello to my friend Melissa.
